What is a QR code and is it safe to scan?

A QR code is a square black-and-white pattern that works like a barcode. When you point your iPhone camera at it, it reads the code and can open a website, add a contact, connect to WiFi, or take another action automatically. QR codes are very common — you see them on restaurant menus, event tickets, business cards, posters, and product packaging. They are generally safe when you see them printed in a physical location you trust, like a restaurant table, a government office brochure, or a product you bought at a store. The concern is with QR codes sent in emails, text messages, or posted on top of legitimate codes (a scam called "QR code phishing" or "quishing"). A QR code in an email can take you to a fake website just as easily as a link can. Before scanning, look at where the code appears and consider whether you trust the source.

How to scan a QR code safely on iPhone

  1. Open your iPhone camera (no special app needed).
  2. Point the camera at the QR code and hold steady for 2 seconds.
  3. A yellow banner will appear at the top of your screen with the website address.
  4. Read the address BEFORE you tap it — does it look like a legitimate website?
  5. Tap the banner only if the address looks right.

The 3-Second Rule

After your iPhone reads a QR code, read the web address shown before you tap. Does it go to the organisation you expected?

Important Warning

Scammers are now placing sticker QR codes on top of legitimate ones in parking meters, restaurants, and public posters. If a QR code looks like a sticker placed on top of something, do not scan it.
