How do I use WiFi safely?
WiFi lets your iPhone or iPad connect to the internet without using your mobile data. Your home WiFi is generally safe as long as it has a password. Public WiFi — in coffee shops, hotels, libraries, and airports — is more risky because other people on the same network can potentially see what you are doing. For everyday browsing on public WiFi — reading news, looking up information — the risk is low. For anything sensitive — online banking, logging into accounts, shopping — use your mobile data instead of public WiFi, or wait until you are home. Your iPhone actually protects you automatically by using a feature called Private Wi-Fi Address, which makes it harder for businesses to track you. Avoid connecting to WiFi networks you do not recognise, especially any named "Free WiFi" with no further identification — these are sometimes set up by scammers to capture your data.
How to manage your WiFi connection
- To connect to your home WiFi: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap your network name → enter your password.
- To disconnect from a network: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the network → tap "Forget This Network".
- For banking in public: turn off WiFi (Settings → Wi-Fi → toggle off) and use mobile data instead.
- To check you are connected to the right network: look for the network name shown under "Wi-Fi" in Settings.
The 3-Second Rule
Before logging into your bank or entering a password in public, ask: "Am I on public WiFi?" If yes — switch to mobile data first.
Important Warning
Never connect to a WiFi network called "Free Airport WiFi" or similar with no password in a location where you would expect a named network. This is a common scammer trap.
