How do I update my iPad?

Updating your iPad is one of the most important things you can do to stay safe — updates fix security weaknesses that criminals could use to access your device. To update, go to Settings (the grey gear icon), then tap 'General', then 'Software Update'. Your iPad will check for available updates. If one is available, tap 'Download and Install'. Make sure your iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery, or plug it in during the update. The process takes 15–30 minutes, and your iPad will restart at the end. Turn on automatic updates so you never have to remember: Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates.

What to do

  1. Open Settings (grey gear icon on your home screen).
  2. Tap 'General' then 'Software Update'.
  3. Wait while your iPad checks for updates.
  4. If an update is available, tap 'Download and Install'.
  5. Enter your passcode if asked.
  6. Leave your iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power until the update completes — it will restart.

The 3-Second Rule

Never ignore an update notification. Security updates should be installed within a few days of release — the longer you wait, the more vulnerable you are.

Important Warning

Do not update your iPad over public Wi-Fi — use your home network. Updates are large and public Wi-Fi can be interrupted, which may cause problems.
