How do I update apps on my iPad?

Updating your apps keeps them safe and working properly. App updates fix security problems, bugs, and add new features. On your iPad, updates happen through the App Store — the blue icon with a white letter A. You can update all your apps at once in about 30 seconds, or set your iPad to update them automatically so you never have to think about it. Outdated apps can have security holes that scammers use to get into your device. Keeping apps up to date is one of the simplest things you can do to stay safe. Apple checks every app update before it is released, so updates from the App Store are safe to install. You should update your iPad's operating system (called iOS) separately through Settings → General → Software Update.

How to update your apps

  1. Open the App Store (blue icon with a white A).
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll down to see apps that need updating.
  4. Tap "Update All" to update everything at once.
  5. Optional: scroll further down and turn on "Automatic Updates" so this happens on its own.

The 3-Second Rule

When you see a red number badge on your App Store icon — those are available updates. Tap the icon and update them.

Important Warning

Never update apps from a website or an email link. Only use the App Store app on your device. Fake "update" prompts on websites are a common scam.
