How do I know if an app is safe to download?

The App Store on your iPhone or iPad is the only place you should download apps — Apple reviews every app before listing it. But even in the App Store, some apps are better than others. Before downloading, check three things: the developer name (is it a well-known company?), the number of reviews (thousands of reviews is a good sign), and the date of the last update (an app not updated in years may be abandoned). Read a few reviews, especially the negative ones. Be cautious of apps that ask for permissions they do not need — a flashlight app does not need access to your contacts. If an app asks for your banking or Social Insurance Number — delete it immediately.

What to do

  1. Only download apps from the App Store — never from websites or links in emails.
  2. Check the developer name — well-known companies are safer than unknown developers.
  3. Look for apps with thousands of reviews — this shows many people use it safely.
  4. Check when the app was last updated — recent updates mean the developer is active.
  5. Read a few reviews before installing.
  6. After installing, review what permissions the app requests — deny any that seem unnecessary.

The 3-Second Rule

The App Store is your best protection. Only ever download apps from there — and never by clicking a link in an email or text message.

Important Warning

If you see an app that claims to give you free gift cards, prizes, or money — it is almost certainly designed to steal your personal information.
