How do I back up my iPhone or iPad?

A backup is a copy of everything on your iPhone or iPad — your photos, contacts, messages, and app settings. If your device is ever lost, stolen, or broken, a recent backup means you can get everything back on a new device. iCloud backup is the easiest method. It happens automatically when your iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to WiFi — usually overnight while you sleep. Apple gives you 5 gigabytes of iCloud storage for free, which is enough for a basic backup, but if you have many photos you may need to purchase more storage (starting at $1.29 per month in Canada). You can also back up to a computer using iTunes or Finder. This stores the backup on your computer's hard drive and is completely free regardless of how much data you have.

How to set up iCloud backup (easiest method)

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap "iCloud".
  4. Tap "iCloud Backup".
  5. Turn on "Back Up This iPhone" if it is not already on.
  6. Tap "Back Up Now" to create a backup immediately.

The 3-Second Rule

When was your last backup? Check now. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup. It shows the date and time of your last backup.

Important Warning

Never back up to a USB drive handed to you by a stranger, or to any device you do not own. Only back up to iCloud or your own personal computer.
