What is Digital Confidence Centre?

Digital Confidence Centre (DCC) is a free, bilingual, browser-based AI literacy platform built for community delivery. It is designed for facilitators to guide groups of seniors, newcomers, and low-digital-confidence adults through structured learning at their own pace.

There is nothing to install and no login required. Learners open any module directly in a browser on any device.

Tip: Bookmark this URL on every device you use with learners. Add it as a shortcut to your library's public computers if possible.

Before your session — 10-minute checklist

  1. Open the platform on the room display or a shared device. Navigate to the module you plan to cover.
  2. Print handouts from the Print Centre: …/print-centre.html. Each module has a large-print summary.
  3. Check font size: Click the "A+" button in the top bar to increase text. Most senior learners prefer the Large or Extra-Large setting.
  4. Check dark mode: If the room is dim, enable dark mode using the moon icon in the top bar. It reduces glare on screens.
  5. Test audio if you plan to use screen readers or the text-to-speech option (built into most browsers — press Ctrl+A, then right-click → "Read aloud").
  6. Prepare one or two discussion questions from the module's "Think About It" section (appears after each tip box).

Suggested session flow (60 minutes)

TimeActivityNotes
0–5 min Welcome & check-in Ask: "What technology question came up for you this week?" One answer each.
5–10 min Module intro Read the module's opening summary aloud. Ask: "Has anyone encountered this before?"
10–30 min Guided read-through Work through sections together. Pause at each tip box. Invite questions. Do not rush.
30–40 min Practice activity Use the interactive elements or quiz if present. For hands-on groups, have learners try on their own device.
40–50 min Discussion "What's one thing you'll try this week?" Round-robin. Reinforces memory and accountability.
50–60 min Wrap-up & preview Summarise the key takeaway. Introduce next session's topic. Hand out the print summary.

For 90-minute sessions: Add a 20-minute hands-on practice block after the guided read-through. Pair learners who have experience with those who do not.

Facilitator notes

Setting the pace

The most common facilitator mistake is moving too quickly. Seniors in your group may process information more slowly — not because of ability, but because every concept is genuinely new. A session that covers half a module well is more valuable than one that covers a full module poorly.

Handling "I'll never get this"

Normalise confusion. Say: "That screen confused me too the first time — here's what I do." Personal anecdotes from the facilitator dramatically reduce learner anxiety. Do not say "It's easy" or "Don't worry" — both dismiss the difficulty.

The one-thing rule

End every session with: "What's the one thing you want to try before next time?" Write it on a sticky note or have learners say it aloud. Recall at the start of the next session. Behavioural change happens through repetition, not one-time exposure.

For newcomer groups (settlement agencies)

Language considerations: some learners may be stronger in French. Switch the interface by clicking the language toggle in the top bar — every module is fully bilingual. For mixed-language groups, run the English and French versions side by side on two screens if possible.
