How do I video call my grandchildren?

Video calling your grandchildren is easier than you might think. If you have an iPhone or iPad and they have an Apple device, FaceTime is the simplest option — it is built in and free. Open the Contacts app, find your grandchild's name, and tap the green FaceTime button. If they use Android or Windows, WhatsApp or Zoom work well on any device. Ask your grandchild or a family member to set up the first call together — after that first connection, you can start calls yourself whenever you like. Good lighting (face a window) and a stable surface for your device make a big difference to the call quality.

What to do

  1. Open the Contacts app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find your grandchild's name and tap on it.
  3. Tap the green FaceTime button (iPhone/iPad to iPhone/iPad only) or use WhatsApp for any device.
  4. Wait for them to answer — your face will appear on screen.
  5. To end the call, tap the red circle with a phone icon.
  6. If the first call is tricky, ask a family member to help set it up together.

The 3-Second Rule

FaceTime only works between Apple devices. For video calls with anyone using Android or a computer, use WhatsApp or Zoom instead.

Important Warning

If someone you do not know sends you a FaceTime request, decline it. Only accept video calls from people you know.
