How do I use Ontario's patient health portal?

Many Ontario hospitals and family health teams now offer patient portals — secure websites where you can see your test results, appointment history, medication list, and sometimes book appointments or message your care team. Common portals in Ontario include MyChart (used by many hospitals), and Ocean (used by many family health teams). To get access, ask your doctor's office or hospital to invite you — they will send an email with a setup link. Set up a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication. Your health information is personal and sensitive, so treat the portal login with the same care as your banking login.

What to do

  1. Ask your doctor's office or hospital if they offer a patient portal.
  2. Ask them to send you an invitation — it will arrive by email.
  3. Click the link in the email and follow the setup instructions to create an account.
  4. Set a strong, unique password — different from all other accounts.
  5. Enable two-factor authentication in the portal settings.
  6. Bookmark the portal website so you always go directly to the real one.

The 3-Second Rule

Your health portal contains very sensitive personal information. Use a unique password and two-factor authentication — treat it as carefully as your banking login.

Important Warning

Phishing emails impersonating patient portals do exist. Only ever access your portal by typing the address yourself or using a saved bookmark — never by clicking a link in an email.
