How do I use FaceTime to call family?
FaceTime is Apple's built-in video calling app — it is free, works beautifully on iPhone and iPad, and requires no account or password. To start a FaceTime call, open the Contacts app, find the person you want to call, and tap the green video camera icon. Or open the FaceTime app and tap the green plus (+) button to search for a contact. FaceTime only works between Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, or Mac). If your family member has an Android phone or Windows computer, ask them to download WhatsApp — it works the same way across all devices.
What to do
- Make sure both you and the other person have an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac).
- Open the Contacts app and find the person you want to call.
- Tap the green video camera icon to start a FaceTime call.
- Wait for them to answer — you will see their face on screen.
- Use the microphone button to mute yourself, and the camera button to switch to rear camera.
- Tap the red phone icon to end the call.
The 3-Second Rule
FaceTime is free — there is no charge for the call, no matter how long you talk, as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi.
Important Warning
FaceTime only works between Apple devices. For calls to family using Android phones or Windows computers, use WhatsApp or Zoom instead.
